Let the Experts Deal with Carpet Cleaning – Get Rid of Your Carpet’s Dark Edges

You go out of your way to keep your office looking clean, tidy, and nice.

But wait. Did you ever wonder why the edges of the carpets in your office turn dark in the first place?

You might notice those dark lines on your carpet, or what the experts call filtration lines under registers, on staircases, and next to walls.

But once again, why do they exist?

The answer is actually simple. Your carpet serves as a filter.

There are several things you need to learn about why your carpet gets filtration lines, how you can prevent them, and how a professional commercial cleaning company can do the job for you.

The Real Origin of Filtration Lines on Carpets

Many older offices and buildings are constructed airtight. However, air constantly flows and must go somewhere.

When walls and a wood subfloor are built, there is a very tiny gap where the wall and floor meet.

Carpet is installed through nailing tackstrip from the wall at around one inch or so. The padding will then go up to the tackstrip, with the carpet installed up to the wall and the tackstrip grabs it.

When air circulates through the area, this flows through that gap between the subfloor and new wall.

As a result, the carpet serves as the filter for oils and dirt flowing through the air. Discoloration occurs once they attach themselves to the carpet’s fiber and just like that, filtration lines occur.

Filtration lines tend to be most evident under doors kept closed for a long period of time, below heat register vents, and around furniture skirting and edges of staircases in some cases.

Tips to Prevent Filtration Lines on Carpets

There are a few steps that can be taken to eliminate, reduce, or prevent these dirt traps completely. Here are some things you can do:

  • When installing a new carpet, ask the contractor to seal that gap where the wall and subfloor meet using tape or caulking before the installation.
  • Clean the air conditioners’ intake filter every month.
  • Replace or clean the filter of the furnace at least every three months.
  • Clean the air ducts every year.
  • Use the hand tool of the vacuum once every month and focus on the carpet’s edges.
  • Make sure that the rooms that are not used often are also vacuumed including areas under the closet doors.
  • Hire a professional who can handle the regular cleaning of your carpets. Rooms that are used often should be cleaned every 6 to 8 months while lightly used rooms can be cleaned once a year.

Filtration lines are not that easy to remove and eliminating them requires a process that involves several steps. Now that you know the real reason behind those dark lines you see on your office carpets, it is time for you to take the necessary steps to ensure that they don’t occur in the first place. Better yet, you might want to contact the cleaning experts like Courtesy Building Services, Inc. to get the problem fixed sooner than later!
